Kairos Palestine Welcomes Bold WCC Actions Affirming Justice, Naming Apartheid, and Advancing Global Solidarity
June 24, 2025 –Jerusalem, Palestine

Kairos Palestine welcomes with deep appreciation and hope the prophetic resolutions adopted by the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) during its meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 18–24 June 2025. We especially affirm the Central Committee’s endorsement of the Report of the Working Group on Palestine and Israel (Document 02.2), which marks a turning point in the moral and theological witness of the global church.

We commend the WCC for declaring, clearly and courageously, that the term “apartheid” is appropriate and prophetic in describing the situation imposed on the Palestinian people. This step acknowledges the reality that Palestinians have endured for over seven decades: systematic oppression, displacement, segregation, and denial of basic human rights.

Kairos Palestine also strongly welcomes the Committee’s firm recommendations to:

  • Ground WCC advocacy in the biblical call for justice and international law;
  • Promote a global shift in narrative by centering the reality of 76 years of Palestinian suffering and the imperative for freedom and self-determination;
  • Confront Christian Zionism and theological interpretations that justify oppression, colonization, or genocide;
  • Support mechanisms of accountability, including sanctions, divestment, and advocacy for the right of return;
  • Establish a global WCC forum for the freedom and self-determination of oppressed peoples, with a first focus on Palestine;
  • Support the courageous witness of both Jewish and Palestinian activists resisting apartheid and injustice.

    These commitments reflect a theology rooted not in abstract doctrine but in lived solidarity, moral courage, and prophetic witness. They offer a vital lifeline to the Palestinian people, and especially to Palestinian Christians, whose cry for justice has too long gone unheard.

    We express our gratitude to the Programme Committee and the Working Group for their clarity and vision, and to all members of the Central Committee who stood with justice—even amid dissent.

    As Kairos Palestine has long declared in A Moment of Truth, this is a time for decisive faith and action. We echo the WCC’s call for churches worldwide to speak truth, live justly, and accompany the oppressed with compassion and resolve.

    We urge immediate implementation of these recommendations and offer our full partnership in this sacred struggle for justice, peace, and dignity.

    “The truth will set you free” (John 8:32)
